Sustainable Dancewear: A Guide

Let's do our part.

· Blog & Articles

In today's world, sustainability is more important than ever, even in the dance community. This blog post explores how dancers can make more eco-friendly choices when it comes to their dancewear.

Greener Pirouettes: How Dancers Can Make Eco-Friendly Choices with Their Dancewear 🌱🩰

Let’s face it—being a dancer means going through a lot of dancewear. Between rehearsals, performances, and growth spurts (hello, never-ending tights shopping), it adds up fast. But what if we told you there’s a way to keep your dance closet fresh and help the planet?

Sustainability isn’t just for water bottles and grocery bags—it belongs in the studio too. Here’s how you can make more eco-conscious choices with your dancewear, one leotard at a time:

1. Support Sustainable Dancewear Brands

Some dancewear companies are stepping up and putting the planet first. Look for brands that:

Use recycled or organic materials

  • Offer slow fashion (aka better quality, less waste)
  • Package items with minimal plastic
  • A few eco-friendly dance brands are popping up, so do a little research and treat yourself to pieces that feel good and do good.

2. Buy Less, Choose Well

We all love a new leotard, but before buying five more in every color, ask yourself: Do I really need this? Focus on versatile, high-quality basics that last through multiple seasons.

Bonus: you’ll spend less time digging through your drawer before class!

3. Donate or Swap Gently Used Items

Still holding onto a barely worn pair of jazz pants or a too-small leotard? Give them new life by:

Donating to local studios or community programs

  • Hosting a dancewear swap with friends
  • Running or contributing to a dancewear drive (👀 see our last post!)
  • You’ll clear out space and help another dancer stay stage-ready.

4. Repair, Don’t Toss

Split seam? Loose elastic? Grab a needle and thread (or ask someone handy) before tossing it. Small fixes can extend the life of your gear and save money.

5. Recycle Old Tights Creatively

Tights that are past the point of no return can still serve a purpose! Use them as:

Hair ties or bun covers

  • Dust cloths
  • Costume accessories
  • Get creative—your tights have one more act left in them.

Final Thoughts

Being a dancer means caring for your body, your art, and your community. By making a few thoughtful choices, you can care for the planet too. Whether it’s buying less, choosing better, or passing your items along, every step counts.

Let’s make sustainability part of our daily warm-up. 🌍✨
